ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT AWARDS AND SCHOLARSHIPS

Recognition of Academic Achievement

The faculty of the College of Communication and Information Sciences recognizes high academic achievement by designating three classes of graduation honors:

The minimum averages of 3.9, 3.7, and 3.5 cannot be achieved by rounding. Averages are calculated based on performance in all courses in which the student was enrolled prior to receiving the degree.

University Honors Program

Qualified students in the College of Communication and Information Sciences are encouraged to participate in the University Honors Program. Complete information is contained in the University Honors Program section of this catalog. The University Honors Program office is located in 111 Temple Tutwiler Hall. Honors Week

Each spring, a week is set aside for the recognition of students' and faculty members' excellence in leadership and scholarship. During Honors Week, departmental and other awards are presented to those students who have demonstrated outstanding scholastic achievement and citizenship.

The College of Communication and Information Sciences has a section of scholarships listed in the Guide to Scholarships for Entering Freshmen and Transfer Students. Please note that the priority application deadline is December 1. Applications must be postmarked by January 15.

College-Wide Scholarships

There are 10 College-wide scholarships available to students in any communication major.

Alabama Power Company Foundation Endowed Scholarships. Amount: Approximately $1,000 annually. Availability: Each year. Eligibility: Outstanding full-time communication pre-major or major (freshman through junior year); legal resident of Alabama.

Mel Allen Endowed Scholarship. Amount: Approximately $1,000 annually. Availability: Several each year. Eligibility: Outstanding entering freshman student enrolled full time in the College of Communication and Information Sciences.

Capstone Communication Society Memorial Endowed Scholarship. Amount: Approximately $1,000 annually. Availability: Two or three each year. Eligibility: Outstanding full-time communication pre-major or major (freshman through junior year).

Frank Deaver Endowed Scholarship for International Communication. Amount: Approximately $1,000 annually. Availability: One each year. Eligibility: Undergraduate students, including international students, pursuing a degree and career in international media in the College of Communication and Information Sciences.

Decatur Daily Endowed Scholarship. Amount: Approximately $2,500 annually. Availability: One or two each year. Eligibility: Outstanding communication major who possesses leadership skills and has a 3.5 GPA.

Oliver H. Delchamps Jr. Endowed Scholarship. Amount: Approximately $1,000 annually. Availability: Several each year. Eligibility: Outstanding full-time communication pre-major or major (freshman or graduate student).

James T. and Joanne Lynaugh Endowed Minority Scholarship. Amount: Approximately $1,000 annually. Availability: One each year. Eligibility: Outstanding minority student majoring in communication; freshman, sophomore, or junior enrolled full time; priority to telecommunication and film major.

Mercedes-Benz U.S. International Inc. Endowed Scholarship. Amount: Approximately $3,000 annually. Availability: Two each year. Eligibility: Outstanding undergraduate students enrolled full time in the College of Communication and Information Sciences who have a "B" average or above and show high potential as a communication professional.

Ione Hendrick Roche Memorial Endowed Scholarship. Amount: Approximately $1,000 annually. Availability: Several each year. Eligibility: Minority woman who intends to pursue a degree in the College of Communication and Information Sciences.

Kelly Sisk Memorial Endowed Scholarship. Amount: Approximately $1,000 annually. Availability: 10 each year. Eligibility: Outstanding full-time communication pre-major or major (freshman through junior year); priority to freshman student.

Advertising and Public Relations

Dr. Arnold Barban Endowed Scholarship in Advertising. Amount: Minimum of $1,000 annually. Availability: One or more each year. Eligibility: Advertising students who show high potential and exceptional promise as advertising professionals.

Vincent J. DeFazio Endowed Memorial Scholarship in Advertising. Amount: Minimum of $1,000 annually. Availability: One each year. Eligibility: Available to students majoring in advertising (rising juniors or seniors) who demonstrate high potential and exceptional promise as advertising professionals; must have a "B" average.

Delchamps Endowed Scholarship for Advertising and Public Relations. Amount: Approximately $1,000 annually. Availability: One or two each year. Eligibility: Outstanding full-time students pursuing undergraduate or graduate degrees in advertising or public relations; priority to students involved in activities of Seventh District, American Advertising Federation (Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, Tennessee); include résumé.

Myatt Harvill Intermark Endowed Memorial Scholarship in the College of Communication. Amount: Approximately $1,000 . Availability: Two or more each year. Eligibility: Outstanding full-time student pursuing undergraduate degree in advertising; recipient will have an opportunity to apply for an internship with Intermark Group Inc.

Melson Roche Leadership Scholarship Award in Advertising and Public Relations. Amount: A minimum of $1,000. Availability: One each year. Eligibility: Outstanding full-time, out-of-state freshmen pursuing degrees in advertising or public relations who have GPAs of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale and ACT scores of 25 or higher; must submit a brief, one- to two-page, double-spaced essay demonstrating leadership skills; include a résumé.

John W. Felton Public Relations Endowed Scholarship. Amount: Minimum of $1,000 annually. Availability: One or two each year. Eligibility: Available to students majoring in public relations (rising juniors or seniors) who demonstrate high potential and exceptional promise as public relations professionals; applicants must be members of UA's student chapter of the Public Relations Society of America.

Tuscaloosa Advertising Federation Scholarship. Amount: Approximately $500 to $1,000 annually; nonrenewable. Eligibility: Advertising major enrolled full time; must be an active Advertising Federation member and a student from Seventh District Advertising Federation (Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, Tennessee); include a résumé.

The Tuscaloosa News Jamie Tucker Memorial Endowed Scholarship. Amount: Minimum of $2,500. Availability: One each year. Eligibility: Full-time undergraduate student with junior standing who intends to pursue a degree in advertising, has a 3.0 or higher GPA, and has a desire for an advertising sales career; priority given to students from the Tuscaloosa area or surrounding counties who demonstrate financial need; the chosen applicant will have first opportunity at a paid summer internship in The Tuscaloosa News advertising department; include a résumé.

Communication Studies

Alabama Forensics Council Scholarships. Amount: In-state tuition. Availability: 20 each year. Eligibility: University undergraduate student interested in and showing aptitude for participation in the forensics (and/or individual events) program. Mary D. Bauer Endowed Scholarship. Amount: $500 annually. Availability: One each year. Eligibility: Priority is given to a full-time student graduating from Enterprise (Alabama) High School and/or Enterprise (Alabama) State Junior College who intends to pursue a degree in communication studies; secondary consideration given to a student enrolled in the College of Communication and Information Sciences intending to pursue a degree in communication studies.

W. T. Goodloe Rutland Endowed Scholarship. Amount: $1,500 annually. Availability: Several annually. Eligibility: Priority to full-time freshman student with demonstrated potential to master the arts of debate, discussion, and persuasion; academic and leadership records, test scores, and two letters of recommendation and an application letter that indicate an interest in the study of human communication. Springford Memorial Endowed Scholarship. Amount: Approximately $1,200 annually. Availability: One each year. Eligibility: Priority of consideration is given to full-time undergraduate students majoring in communication studies in the College of Communication and Information Sciences who graduated from a high school in Crenshaw, Pike, Coffee, or Geneva Counties in Alabama. Second priority of consideration is given to other full-time undergraduate students majoring in communications studies in the College of Communication and Information Sciences who graduated from any high school in Alabama.

Journalism

H. M. Ayers Endowed Scholarship in Creative Journalism. Amount: Approximately $1,500 annually. Availability: One each year. Eligibility: Available to journalism students who are specializing in creative journalism; priority to advanced undergraduates and exceptional graduate students; secondary consideration given to qualified students in the Department of Journalism.

William L. Bennett Endowed Memorial Scholarship in Journalism. Amount: Minimum $2,500 annually. Availability: One each year. Eligibility: Available to students majoring in print journalism (rising juniors or seniors) with demonstrated leadership and writing skills and interest in sports writing; must have a minimum "B" average.

Boone Newspaper Group Scholarship Fund. Amount: In-state tuition for two semesters. Availability: One each year. Eligibility: Outstanding rising senior or rising junior who intends to pursue a career in print journalism; GPA of 3.0; priority to students who work part time in the College of Communication and Information Sciences.

Buford Boone Memorial Endowed Journalism Scholarship. Amount: Approximately $1,000 annually. Availability: Two or three each year. Eligibility: Outstanding rising senior or rising junior who intends to pursue a career in print journalism; GPA of 3.0; priority to students who work part time while in college.

Boone Memorial Arts and Sciences/Journalism Scholarship. Eligibility: Advanced undergraduate journalism student.

Wilfred Galbraith Endowed Scholarship. Amount: In-state tuition for two semesters. Availability: Four each year. Eligibility: Outstanding rising senior or rising junior who intends to pursue a career in print journalism; GPA of 3.0; priority to students who work part time in the College of Communication and Information Sciences.

Frances and Caroll Kilpatrick Endowed Memorial Scholarship in Journalism. Amount: $1,000 annually. Availability: One each year. Eligibility: Outstanding future journalist with financial need; freshman through master's student.

John S. and James L. Knight Minority Scholarship. Amount: Approximately $1,000 annually. Availability: One or two each year. Eligibility: Outstanding minority student majoring in journalism; full-time freshman through junior.

Mobile Register Endowed Business Journalism Scholarship/Fellowship. Amount: approximately $1,000 annually for undergraduates and $2,000 annually for graduates. Availability: Minimum of two undergraduates and one graduate each year. Eligibility: Outstanding junior, senior, or graduate student planning to pursue a career in business journalism; declared major in journalism and approved minor in commerce and business administration.

Shelton Prince Jr. Memorial Endowed Scholarship. Amount: Approximately $1,500 annually. Availability: One or more each year. Eligibility: Outstanding full-time undergraduate planning to pursue a career in communication, preferably in the newspaper business; satisfactory progress.

Charles W. Scarritt Memorial Endowed Scholarship. Amount: Approximately $500 annually. Availability: One each year. Eligibility: Outstanding rising senior or rising junior who intends to pursue a career in the newspaper business.

Alf Van Hoose Endowed Journalism Scholarship. Amount: $1,000 annually. Availability: Two each year. Eligibility: Outstanding full-time student pursuing a career in journalism; priority entering freshmen.

Carmage and Martha Ann Walls Endowed Scholarship in Print Journalism. Amount: Minimum $1,500 annually. Availability: Two or more each year. Eligibility: Priority given to students from communities served by Southern Newspapers Inc. who intend to pursue a degree in print journalism.

J. E. Lisby Memorial Endowed Scholarship. Amount: Approximately $1,500 annually. Availability: One each year. Eligibility: Priority of consideration is given to full-time undergraduate students majoring in journalism in the College of Communication & Information Sciences. Recipients are selected on the basis of scholarship and writing skills, with preference being given to students interested in sports writing. Recipients must possess a minimum grade average of "B."

Bailey Thomson Memorial Endowed Scholarship in Journalism. Amount: Approximately $1,000 annually. Availability: One each year. Eligibility: Priority of consideration is given to full-time undergraduate students majoring in journalism in the College of Communication and Information Sciences. Each recipient must be majoring in journalism, possess a minimum grade average of "B," show promise as a writer, and possess the qualities of excellence and citizen involvement exemplified by Dr. Thomson.

Telecommunication and Film

"Pap" Dunnavant Endowed Scholarship. Amount: Approximately $750 per semester; nonrenewable. Availability: One each year. Eligibility: Outstanding full-time junior majoring in telecommunication; priority to student from the Tennessee Valley or North Alabama.

John M. Forney Endowed Memorial Scholarship in Telecommunication and Film. Amount: Approximately $1,000 annually. Availability: One or more each year. Eligibility: Available for students enrolled in telecommunications and film who show exceptional promise as broadcast professionals.

Keith and Turi Ann Jackson Endowed Memorial Scholarship in Telecommunication and Film. Amount: Approximately $1,200 annually. Availability: One or more each year. Eligibility: Available for students enrolled in telecommunications and film who show exceptional promise as broadcast professionals.

Eloise and Charles Poellnitz Johnston Endowed Scholarship. Amount: Approximately $600 annually. Availability: One or more each year Eligibility: Full-time telecommunication student (entering freshman through junior) with financial need; proven academic ability with potential to become a successful broadcaster; priority, Alabama resident.

Louise and Henry Poellnitz Johnston Endowed Scholarship. Amount: Approximately $350 annually. Availability: One each year. Eligibility: Full-time telecommunication student (entering freshman through junior) with financial need; proven academic ability with potential to become a successful broadcaster.

Bob Jones Memorial Endowed Scholarship. Amount: Approximately $300 annually. Availability: One each year. Eligibility: Telecommunication major enrolled full time (freshman through junior); strong potential and desire to pursue a career in journalism.

Carol and Clyde Price Family Endowed Scholarship. Amount: Approximately $1,200 per semester. Availability: One each year. Eligibility: Awarded to an entering freshman pursuing a degree in broadcasting, with first priority to a student seeking a degree in radio broadcasting.

WBMG-TV Endowed Scholarship. Amount: Approximately $500 . Availability: One each year. Eligibility: Full-time telecommunication major (entering freshman through junior); priority to minority students.
