[Student Financial Aid]

APPLYING FOR FINANCIAL AID

Free Application for Federal Student Aid. To determine the amount of financial aid for which a student is eligible, the University uses the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or FAFSA. This form is distributed by the U.S. Department of Education and other authorized agencies. The FAFSA contains the core of information required to determine financial aid eligibility. The information will be forwarded to The University of Alabama if the student designates UA as a recipient, using UA's school code 001051.

FAFSA forms are available online at www.fafsa.ed.gov. The University of Alabama sends a FAFSA to each admitted student who requests financial aid information as part of the admission process for the initial period of attendance. Students must complete the FAFSA each year in order to be considered for financial aid. In December, the U.S. Department of Education mails FAFSA renewal information to each student who completed a FAFSA the previous year.

Students are encouraged to complete and mail the FAFSA or renewal FAFSA as soon as possible after January 1. Processing can take three to four weeks, so it is important to begin early.

Although The University of Alabama sets no deadline to apply for financial aid, there is a March 1 priority date for consideration for aid for the following academic year. Because funding of financial aid programs may be limited, there is no guarantee that a student will receive financial aid for which he or she is eligible.
