COMMUNICATIVE DISORDERS (CD)

CD 225 Introduction to Communicative Disorders. Three hours.

Study of the types of speech, language, and hearing disorders; an introduction to the principles of rehabilitation of communicative disorders; and a consideration of employment settings. Offered each semester.

CD 226 Language and Speech Development. Three hours.

Theory and practice of normal speech and language processes and sequences. Offered in the fall semester.

CD 244 Phonetics. Three hours.

Study of the principles of phonetics and their application to speech. The International Phonetic Alphabet is used for study and transcription. Offered each semester.

CD 275 Anatomy and Physiology of the Speech and Hearing Mechanism. Three hours.

Detailed study of the bases of speech and hearing, including anatomy, physiology, neurology, and physics. Offered each semester.

CD 277 Preprofessional Laboratory Experience. One hour.

Structured observational activities for students prior to their enrollment in practicum courses in speech-language pathology. Offered each semester. Open to CD majors only.

CD 350 Independent Study in Communicative Disorders. One to three hours.

Prerequisites: 18 hours in the department, 3.0 grade point average, and permission of the instructor.

Directed readings in an area of communicative disorders. Offered each semester. Open to CD majors only.

CD 371 Speech Disorders I. Three hours.

Prerequisites for major: CD 225, CD 226, and CD 244.

Prerequisite for minor: CD 225.

Assessment and remediation of delayed language, phonological disorders, stuttering and related disorders, and speech problems associated with cleft palate. Offered in the fall semester.

CD 372 Speech Disorders II. Three hours.

Prerequisite: CD 371.

Assessment and remediation of voice disorders, aphasia, and speech problems associated with cerebral palsy and other central nervous system disturbances, and professional issues. Offered in the spring semester.

CD 377 Clinical Practicum I, Speech. Three hours.

Prerequisites: CD 225, CD 226, CD 244, CD 275, CD 277, CD 371, and admission to clinical practicum.

Supervised clinical practice in speech therapy with children. Offered each semester and in summer session. Open to CD majors only.

CD 378 Clinical Practicum II, Speech. One to three hours.

Prerequisites: CD 377 and permission of the instructor.

Advanced supervised clinical practice with various communicative disorders. Offered each semester and in summer session. Open to CD majors only.

CD 411 Speech and Hearing Science. Three hours.

Prerequisite: All 200-level CD courses.

A study of speech physiology, basic electronics, basic acoustics, speech acoustics, auditory perception, and neuroanatomy. Class work and laboratory sessions cover speech spectrographic analysis, basic sound measurement, and selected other instrumentation used in the speech and hearing science laboratory. Open to CD majors only.

CD 442 Public School Internship, Speech-Language Pathology. Three to six hours.

Prerequisite: CD 377.

Organization, management, and implementation of public school speech, language, and hearing programs. Supervised clinical practice in the public schools. Offered each semester. Open to CD majors only.

CD 443 Basic Audiology. Three hours.

Prerequisite: All 200-level CD courses.

Introduction to hearing evaluation, conservation, impairment, and handicap. Also considers the auditory system: anatomy, physiology, and pathology. Includes three laboratory sessions. Offered in the fall semester, and in summer sessions of odd-numbered years.

CD 444 Aural Rehabilitation. Three hours.

Prerequisite: All 200-level CD courses.

The rehabilitation of hearing-impaired people primarily through auditory and visual training. Other sensory training, language development, speech production, and guidance are also considered. Offered in the spring semester, and in summer sessions of even-numbered years. Open to CD majors only.

CD 445 Audiology Laboratory Experience. One to three hours.

Prerequisite: All 200-level CD courses.

Supervised laboratory or clinical experience in hearing evaluation and habilitation. Offered each semester. Open to CD majors only.
