ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT AWARDS AND SCHOLARSHIPS

Honors at graduation. The faculty of the College of Human Environmental Sciences recognizes high academic achievement by granting the following three honors at graduation:

The minimum averages required for these honors designations cannot be achieved by rounding.

Awards. The following awards are presented by the College of Human Environmental Sciences.

Annual Fund Scholarship. This scholarship is available to any student in the College of Human Environmental Sciences. Priority is given to students with good records of scholarship and leadership who also have financial need.

Bill McDonald Athletic Training Citizenship Award. This award is presented annually to the undergraduate or graduate student in the Athletic Training Education Program who best exemplifies the qualities of scholarship, clinical skill, service, leadership, and citizenship.

Council of Presidents' Freshman Academic Achievement Award. This award is based on the fall semester grades for new freshmen.

Mable Adams Student Service Award. This award is presented in recognition of special service to the College of Human Environmental Sciences, its departments, and/or the community, and of evidence of professionalism in attitude and service.

Alabama Dietetic Association Award. The Alabama Dietetic Association makes an annual award to the outstanding senior majoring in food and nutrition at The University of Alabama.

AAYC Award. The Alabama Association for Young Children makes an annual award to the most outstanding student enrolled in a child-development program that leads to work with young children.

Mary A. Crenshaw Distinguished Student Award. This award is the highest award that can be given to an undergraduate CHES student. It recognizes outstanding achievement in the areas of leadership, scholarship, and service.

Linda Lantz Hallmark Service in Consumer Sciences Award. This award is presented annually to a student majoring in consumer sciences in recognition of outstanding service to the area of consumer sciences.

Dorothy Jones Award. Students and faculty choose as the recipient of this annual award a student who has demonstrated outstanding achievement in food-service management.

Lea Cowles Masters Award. The award is presented to an outstanding senior in the Department of Human Development and Family Studies who has demonstrated professional service and leadership.

Outstanding Consumer Sciences Student Award. This award is presented annually to a student in the Department of Consumer Sciences who has displayed exceptional leadership and scholarship.

Outstanding Senior in General Health Studies Award. This award is presented annually to an outstanding senior majoring in general health studies.

Outstanding Senior in Human Development and Family Studies Award. This award is presented annually to an outstanding senior majoring in human development and family studies.

Outstanding Senior in Human Environmental Sciences Award. The student affiliate of the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences annually recognizes a graduating senior.

Outstanding Senior in Interior Design Award. This award honors the outstanding senior majoring in interior design who has displayed an exceptional interest and participation in interior design activities, a high degree of design ability, and promise of future achievement.

Outstanding Senior in Restaurant and Hospitality Management Award. This award is presented to a senior student majoring in restaurant and hospitality management, in recognition of scholarship and leadership.

Phi Upsilon Omicron Award. Phi Upsilon Omicron is the national honor society in human environmental sciences. Each year, the society honors the freshman students in the College of Human Environmental Sciences who makes the highest average for all college work.

Joseph S. Rowland Award. This award is presented annually to an outstanding student in the Department of Human Development and Family Studies with a concentration in family studies.

Margaret Stough Gold Key Award. This award is presented to a senior in apparel and textiles who has provided outstanding service to the department and exhibited dedication to high professional standards, academic accomplishment, and potential for professional achievement.

Martha Strickland Excellence in Child Life Award. This award is presented to an outstanding student in the Department of Human Development and Family Studies who is concentrating his/her work in child life.

Emily Strong Award. This award is presented annually by the student section of the National Association for the Education of Young Children to a student majoring in human development and family studies who has demonstrated outstanding scholarship and leadership.

Henrietta Thompson Fashion Achievement Award. Fashion Incorporated, a professional organization, annually honors a student majoring in apparel and textiles who has demonstrated outstanding leadership, scholarship, and promise of professional achievement.

Scholarships and assistantships. Students in the College of Human Environmental Sciences may be eligible for the following awards and scholarships. Mable Adams Scholarship. This scholarship is available to a student who has been enrolled in the College of Human Environmental Sciences for at least one semester and has completed 35 hours with an overall grade point average of 3.00 or higher.

American Sports Medicine Institute Scholarship. This award is presented by the American Sports Medicine Institute to the outstanding male and female students in the third year of the Athletic Training Education Program.

Lamar C. Bagby Scholarship. This scholarship is available to any student in the College of Human Environmental Sciences. Priority is given to students with good records of scholarship and leadership who also have financial need.

Judith L. Bonner Scholarship. Students whose academic achievements, leadership, and records of activities are outstanding are eligible for this scholarship.

J. Diane Bostick Endowed Scholarship. Priority for this scholarship is given to entering freshman students from the Greater New York area who are majoring in the Department of Clothing, Textiles, and Interior Design.

Otis C. Braswell Scholarship. This scholarship is available to students majoring in interior design.

Sarah Margaret Browning Endowed Scholarship. This scholarship is available to students majoring in apparel and textiles.

Barbara H. Buchalter Scholarship. This scholarship is available to any student in the College of Human Environmental Sciences. Priority is given to students with good records of scholarship and leadership who also have financial need.

Myrtle Berry Bullen and Omer Bullen Scholarship. Any entering freshman student in a human environmental sciences major may apply.

Sharon Burrow Endowed Scholarship. Priority is given to students with need who are majoring in human development and family studies.

Doris Burton Scholarship. This scholarship is available to a student majoring in interior design.

Business Interiors Scholarship. Priority is given to students majoring in interior design.

Stephanie Colbert Scholarship. This scholarship is available for students majoring in restaurant and hospitality management.

Susan Curtin Scholarship. This scholarship is available for students majoring in food and nutrition.

Jacqueline Vincent Davis Scholarship. A scholarship for students majoring in the Department of Human Development and Family Studies.

Helen Goetz Scholarship. A scholarship for students majoring in consumer sciences.

Nancy Wayne Hendricks Scholarship. Priority is given to students majoring in food and nutrition.

Haines Financial Advisors Outstanding Student in Financial Planning Scholarship. This scholarship is available for students who have excelled academically in the area of family financial planning and counseling.

Ernestine Jackson Scholarship. The scholarship is available to a student majoring in food and nutrition.

Angela J. Knight Memorial Scholarship. Priority is given to apparel and textiles and interior design majors.

Carney Laslie/Mike Henne Quasi-Endowed Scholarship Award. This award is presented to the outstanding graduating student in the Athletic Training Education Program.

Jean Liles Scholarship. This scholarship is available to students in any human environmental sciences major.

Joan Pearce Scholarship. This scholarship is available to any student in the College of Human Environmental Sciences. Priority is given to students with good records of scholarship and leadership who also have financial need.

Rachel Wray Pearce Scholarship. This scholarship is available to any student in the College of Human Environmental Sciences. Priority is given to students with good records of scholarship and leadership who also have financial need

Minnie Hayes Rast Scholarship. Priority for this scholarship is given to entering freshman students in the Department of Clothing, Textiles, and Interior Design.

Bonnie Goodman Runnion Scholarship. This scholarship is available to undergraduate students in the College of Human Environmental Sciences.

Sheraton Four-Points Scholarship. A scholarship for students majoring in restaurant and hospitality management.

Southern Progress Corporation Scholarship. This scholarship is open to any major in the College.

Kathleen Stitt Scholarship. This scholarship is available to food and nutrition majors.

Margaret Lynch Stough Scholarship. Priority for this scholarship is given to entering freshman students in apparel and textiles.

E. Neige Todhunter Scholarship Award. This award is available to a senior majoring in dietetics.

Josephine Turner Scholarship. A scholarship presented to a student majoring in consumer sciences.

Sue Sims Virciglio Scholarship. This scholarship is available for any major in the College.

Angie Suttle Webb Scholarship. This scholarship is open to any major in the College.

Undergraduate Student Assistantships. Students may contact their department heads about the availability of assistantships. The amount of the stipend varies according to the number of hours worked and the services rendered.
