DEPARTMENT OF WOMEN'S STUDIES (WS)

The mission of the Department of Women's Studies is to provide a forum for interdisciplinary teaching, research, and service in order to facilitate the critical investigation of the status and roles of women in society and to promote research by and about women.

Requirements for the minor in women's studies. The women's studies minor requires 18 hours, including WS 200, and WS 430 or WS 470. Women-related courses such as PY 371, AMS 340, EN 373, COM 340, COM 425, and COM 469 may be applied to the women's studies minor. A minimum of 6 hours at the 300 or 400 level must be earned on this campus.

Women involved in learning and living (WILL). WILL is an academic and leadership development program for undergraduate women who are freshmen, sophomores, and first-year juniors at The University of Alabama. The WILL program has been a nationally recognized model for educating women students since 1980. The purpose of WILL is to promote educational achievement and leadership among women students in strategic and innovative ways and to bring together women with similar academic interests. The WILL program incorporates coursework, a student leadership organization, and participation in women-focused and gender-focused events and programs. Both women's studies minors and non-minors are eligible to participate in the leadership program. For more information on the WILL program, contact the Department of Women's Studies.

Graduate programs. The Department of Women's Studies offers the master of arts degree in women's studies. The requirements for this degree are stated in the University of Alabama graduate catalog.
