record-breaking number of in-state first-year students highlights The University of Alabama’s fall 2024 total enrollment of 40,846, surpassing 40,000 for the first time.

UA’s unwavering commitment to student success led to the record-breaking enrollment, which includes 3,434 freshmen from Alabama, marking the largest number of in-state freshmen ever. This 7.9% increase in in-state first-year students is UA’s sixth consecutive year with an in-state increase. Second-year retention also reached an all-time high at nearly 90%. 

With students from all 67 Alabama counties, all 50 states, the District of Columbia and 95 countries, UA is educating and graduating more students than any college in the state, awarding more than 9,000 degrees over the past year.

In-state student growth is outpacing the state’s population growth, increasing 4.7% overall and 7.9% among first-time undergraduates. First generation students among all undergraduates increased 9.8%. 

Graduate School enrollment jumped 5.4% with 6,001 students. The number of in-state graduate students increased 8.3%.

The University has a record enrollment of 10,111 minority students, an 8.2% increase from 2023.

UA has achieved R1: Doctoral Universities – Very High Research Activity status in the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education.

University of Alabama students continue to win prestigious national awards. Sixty-five UA students have been named Goldwater Scholars. The University of Alabama has produced a total of 16 Rhodes Scholars, 16 Truman Scholars, 43 Hollings Scholars and 20 Boren Scholars.

UA is among the National Academy of Inventor’s Top 100 U.S. Universities Granted U.S. Utility Patents.

The Fulbright Program selected 14 UA students for various awards for the 2024-2025 academic year.

U.S. News and World Report ranks the UA School of Law No. 14 among public universities.

The UA School of Social Work ranks No. 17 among public universities on U.S. News and World Report’s list of Best Schools for Social Work as part of its Best Graduate Schools rankings.

U.S. News and World Report ranks the UA Manderson Graduate School MBA Program No. 29 among public business schools on the list of best business graduate schools. 

Three UA students were among 47 from around the nation selected for the prestigious Brooke Owens Fellowship, a nationally acclaimed nonprofit program that awards exceptional women and gender minorities with an internship in the fields of space and aviation.

The UA Culverhouse College of Business is ranked No. 29 among public universities on U.S. News and World Report’s list of Best Undergraduate Business Programs. Undergraduate programs within Culverhouse that were ranked include the accounting program ranking No. 17 among public accounting programs, and marketing ranking No. 22 among public offerings. 

The UA Capstone College of Nursing ranks No. 31 on U.S. News and World Report’s list of Best Bachelor of Science in Nursing Programs.

Forty current UA faculty have received NSF CAREER Awards, one of the nation’s most prestigious recognition of top-performing young scientists, in disciplines ranging from nanoscience and engineering to biological sciences.

UA was recognized as a Top Producing Institution of Fulbright U.S. Students for the seventh time in nine years as well as a Top Producing Institution of Fulbright U.S. Scholars for the first time. UA is one of 12 universities in the nation to receive both designations.

UA made Forbes’ lists of Best Employers for New Grads 2024, America’s Best-In-State Employers 2024 and America’s Top Colleges 2023.

UA appeared on 13 U.S. News and World Report lists ranking the Best Online Programs, including five programs ranked in the top 10 of their respective lists.    

The Capstone College of Nursing boasts a 99.56% National Council Licensure Examination pass rate among its 2023 graduates, far exceeding the national average of 69.66%.

Total statewide economic impact of UA: $2.967 billion; 14,032 jobs; and $145.9 million in income and sales taxes (UA Center for Business and Economic Research).

  • 41.7% legal Alabama residents
  • 58.3% come from elsewhere in the United States and 92 foreign countries
  • 57.2% are women
  • 42.8% are men
