Selma Native’s Sculptures, Drawings on Display at UA

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Sculpture and drawings from the Ann Norton Sculpture Gardens in West Palm Beach, Fla., will be on view at The University of Alabama’s Sarah Moody Gallery of Art and the Sella-Granata Art Gallery on Woods Quad during March.

Cynthia Palmeiri, executive director of the Gardens, is curator of the show. This exhibit offers a survey of sculpture by Selma native Ann Weaver Norton (1905-1982) and exposes something of the artist’s thought process through the accompanying works on paper.

After leaving Selma, Norton attended Smith College before moving to New York to study at the National Academy of Design, Arts Student League of New York and Cooper Union. Norton participated in group shows in New York at the Museum of Modern Art and Whitney Museum of American Art.

She was a recipient of two Carnegie Travel Fellowships. Solo and group exhibitions included: the Schneider Gallery, Rome; Musée Rodin, Paris; the Bodley and Max Hutchinson galleries in New York; and the Lowe Museum of Art in Coral Gables, Fla. In 1977 she established the Ann Norton Sculpture Gardens to preserve her art studio, sculpture gardens and architecture

The Sarah Moody Gallery of Art and the Sella-Granata Art Gallery are supported by The College of Arts and Sciences and the department of art and art history. Hours at the Moody Gallery are 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday.
