TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — The University of Alabama’s Paul R. Jones Collection of American Art K-12 Fellows Program is accepting applications for teachers who want to take part in the program.
This College of Arts & Sciences-Tuscaloosa City Schools partnership provides an opportunity for teachers working in the city schools to develop innovative curricula inspired by the Paul R. Jones Collection of American Art at UA.
The Paul R. Jones Collection is one of the largest and most comprehensive collections of 20th-century African American art in the world. It was amassed over decades by Paul Raymond Jones, who has been described by Art & Antiques magazine as “one of the top art collectors in the country.”
Jones envisioned his collection as a resource to be shared with Alabamians and as a way to educate students about the importance of art in life. The Paul R. Jones Collection of American Art K-12 Fellows program is designed to actualize his vision.
Two schools will be selected to participate in the program, said Dr. Wendy Castenell, UA assistant professor of African American Art. Teachers will be paired with undergraduate and graduate students who will help them lead K-12 students in creating art projects inspired by the Paul R. Jones collection. Financial assistance of up to $1,000 will be provided to pay for supplies.
The program is one semester long. For the first few weeks, teachers and fellows will be required to attend a seminar to learn about community engagement.
Applications for the program are due by April 29. Teachers interested in participating can apply at http://paulrjonescollection.as.ua.edu/apply/.
The College of Arts and Sciences is the University’s largest division and the largest liberal arts college in the state. Students from the College have won numerous national awards including Rhodes and Goldwater scholarships.
